Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express: how does it work?

If you have a 700+ credit score and want the prestige of owning an Amex card, the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express is a solid alternative for your wallet.

Amex even allows you to pre-qualify for it with only a soft pull. That means pre-qualification won’t impact your current score.

If approved, you have the chance to get $350 in statement credit after meeting the minimum spending requirements ($3,000) within the first six months from account opening. Then, you’ll start to earn rewards on every purchase you make.

If you spend a lot at supermarkets, you’ll get 6% back up to $6,000 a year (after that, 1%). The same amount goes to select U.S. streaming subscriptions to keep you entertained at home.

To help you move around, the card offers 3% back in transit expenses as well as purchases at U.S. gas stations. Finally, you’ll also get 1% with every other purchase.

The Blue Cash Preferred Card also offers an introductory APR period on purchases and balance transfers for 12 months.

After that, you’ll get a standard variable APR between 16.24% and 27.24%.

  • It does offer an 0% intro APR on balance transfers, but there is a 3% balance transfer fee that applies to each transaction;
  • It charges a foreign transaction fee.

Is a good credit score required for applicants?

Yes. You can pre-qualify for the card with no hard inquiries on your score to see if it’s available to your financial profile.

However, the minimum score required for eligibility is between good and excellent. If your current rating is below that, you’ll not get this card.
