TD Ameritrade: understand how it works
TD Ameritrade offers brokerage accounts with no account minimum and charges no commission on stock trading, except OTCs. There is no maintenance fee associated with their account.
In fact, the major fee you will encounter in this account is in case you decide to transfer all of your assets to another brokerage.
In that case, the fee is $75, which is quite salty. Partial transfers, however, carry no costs. They offer a selection of 3,700 mutual funds for you to trade with no transaction fees.
Mind you that funds carry their own costs, but rest assured TD Ameritrade does its homework when it comes to selecting low-cost and low-minimum funds.
Aside from the previously mentioned securities, this brokerage features a wide range of tradable securities.
They include futures, forex and even bitcoin futures for approved clients. It does not offer direct access to crypto, only through crypto-based products.
There are two ways you can trade using TD Ameritrade. The first one is through their main website, where you will find virtually anything the average investor needs to make a decision.
There you will find useful tools like screeners, a customizable landing page, and a GainsKeeper tool to help you track gains and losses for tax purposes.
The other way to trade, which caters to more advanced traders, is through their desktop trading platform. It is known as thinkorswim, and with it you can trade stocks, ETFs, futures and forex.
This tool is very robust with customizable technical analysis tools, screeners, real-time news and much much more.
But if you can not get to your computer to place an urgent trade, you can do that via Twitter Direct Messages, Facebook Messenger and Apple Business Chat.
This is a rare broker that, even though charges no commissions, offers its clients an impressive list of services and tools.
