American Express® Gold Card: how does it work?

The American Express Gold Card is a mid-range option for earning American Express Membership Rewards points.

The card offers 4 Membership Rewards points per dollar spent on dining and delivery, and 4 points per dollar at U.S. supermarkets. It also offers 3 points per dollar on flights, and 1 point per dollar on other eligible purchases.

The card has a $250 annual fee and a welcome bonus of 60,000 Membership Rewards points after spending $4,000 in the first 6 months.

The card offers up to $120 in dining credits and up to $120 in Uber Cash. However, you must redeem the dining credit monthly in $10 increments and is only valid at selected restaurants.

You must also use the Uber Cash at $10 per month and only for U.S. rides and Uber Eats.

American Express Membership Rewards points are flexible and you can transfer them to airline partners. You can also redeem for a variety of gift cards in travel, retail, and restaurant categories.

The average household spends $10,833 on restaurants and groceries, $1,520 on airfare, and $19,719 on other purchases. This could earn them 67,611 Membership Rewards points per year, in addition to the welcome bonus.

The card offers secondary car rental damage and loss insurance and no foreign transaction fees. The card also allows up to five authorized cardholders to share travel protection benefits.
