Helpful strategies for living on a single income

Trying to live on one income can be tough – but it's not impossible. Here are some tips that can help make things a little bit easier for you and your family.

What is the ImmiCard?

The ImmiCard is a secure identification card. The Australian Government’s Department of Home Affairs is the entity responsible for issuing to non-citizens residing in Australia.

It serves as proof of your lawful status in the country. It also serves as your entitlements to work and access government services in the country.

This document replaces the paper-based documentation which the department previously used. It also provides a more secure and convenient way for non-citizens to access government services.

What are the two types of ImmiCard?

There are two types of ImmiCard which the Department of Home Affairs issues. They are the ImmiCard (Migration) and the ImmiCard (Resident Return).

Firstly, the Department of Home Affairs issues the Migration type of ImmiCard to individuals who have an ongoing migration status in Australia.

You fit this category if you are a temporary or permanent resident, a refugee, or an asylum seeker.

So your ImmiCard (Migration) will contain information about your visa status and your entitlements in Australia. We are talking about things such as work rights and access to government services.

Secondly, the Department of Home Affairs the Resident Return type of ImmiCard to permanent residents who wish to travel outside Australia and return.

These permanent residents, however, do not hold a current permanent visa.

So this card serves as evidence of the individual’s right to return to Australia as a permanent resident. This is true even if they have been outside the country for an extended period.

What are the differences between the two types of ImmiCard?

The main difference between the two types of ImmiCard is their purpose. The ImmiCard (Migration) is for individuals with an ongoing migration status in Australia.

Meanwhile, the ImmiCard (Resident Return) is for permanent residents who wish to return to Australia after an extended period overseas.

Another key difference between the two cards is the information they contain. The ImmiCard (Migration) contains information about the individual’s visa status and entitlements in Australia.

The ImmiCard (Resident Return), on the other hand, contains information about the individual’s right to return to Australia as a permanent resident.

What are the eligibility requirements for each of the two types of ImmiCard in Australia?

To be eligible for the ImmiCard (Migration), you must have an ongoing migration status in Australia. This includes temporary and permanent residents, refugees, and asylum seekers.

You must also meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • You must be currently residing in Australia
  • You must have a valid passport or travel document
  • You must have a current visa or have made a valid application for a visa
  • You must be able to provide proof of their identity and immigration status
  • You must meet any other eligibility criteria set by the Department of Home Affairs.

Let’s say you do not hold a current permanent visa and are a permanent resident in the country wanting to travel abroad and return.

To be eligible for the ImmiCard (Resident Return), you must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • You must have previously been granted a permanent visa to Australia
  • You must have lived in Australia for at least two of the past five years as a permanent resident
  • You must not have a current permanent visa or be eligible to apply for one
  • You must meet any other eligibility criteria set by the Department of Home Affairs.
